Dentures provide
another surface in the mouth for bacteria to grow on and so should
only be given to people with relatively clean mouths.
Ideally you
should leave your dentures out at night to minimise the chance of
bacteria growing on them while you are asleep.
These can be kept
overnight in a cleaning solution e.g. sterodent in a glass of
water.
Dentures can also
be brushed with denture pastes/toothpastes if not too abrasive.
Do this over a sink of water so if you drop them, they
don’t break.
Be warned some
cleaners e.g. Denclen is acidic and not suitable for metal
dentures. Dentural is
also a cleaner that can corrode metal.
Consult your
dentist if you are unsure which to use.
Some dentures,
known as immediate dentures, are fitted immediately after teeth
have been extracted. As
the mouth heals it changes shape and the denture can begin to rock
and become unstable.
The healing
process can take months at the end of which the dentures can be
adjusted to fit tighter.
Fixatives such as
polygrip/polygrip strips/Fixodent (shown below) can help during
this period.
