There are usually two main causes of receding gums

  • Brushing gums too hard
  • Previous gum disease

Brushing gums too hard can cause the gum to recede exposing root surface.  This can be very sensitive to cold.

Receding Gums

As swollen gums heal, they can recede exposing the root.

There are few ways to tackle this problem.  Firstly, the area should be kept clean, gently, with a soft or electric brush.

Secondly, sensitive toothpastes (e.g. Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive) can be used regularly to relieve cold sensitivity in these areas.  Placing a bit of paste on the area as you got to bed has been reported anecdotally to have good results in reducing sensitivity.

Your dentist may also prescribe a strong toothpaste (Duraphat, available at reception) to help, or paint very highly concentrated fluoride on the areas to relieve the problem.

Ultimately, if none of the above treatments succeed, white fillings can be placed over the exposed root surface to cover it up and prevent it from being sensitive.

In very severe cases, patients can be referred to have their gum repositioned surgically back down the tooth.

Please speak to your dentist to discuss the best options for yourself if  you suffer from this problem.
