As well as the many effects smoking has on the body, it has adverse effects in the mouth, this include:

Staining

Some whitening toothpastes prove helpful in keeping tobacco smoking to a minimum.  However, some staining can be very stubborn especially if it has built up over years.  Airflow is a technique your dentist can provide at a cost of £50.  It involves cleaning the teeth with air, water and powder to help remove these stains.

Bad Breath/Gum Disease

Bad breath can be caused by plaque bacteria in the mouth which also cause gum disease.  Smoking can lead to gum disease known as Periodontitis.

The Effects of Smoking - Periodontitis

The bone underneath the gum is irreversibly destroyed by cigarette smoke.  As your teeth gradually lose their foundation, they can become wobbly and after years even fall out.

Your dentist can help to keep your gums clean, but ultimately stopping smoking is the best treatment for some individuals.

 Oral Cancer

Both smoking and chewing tobacco can cause cancer in your mouth.

Cancer in a Mouth

Cancer can take many forms.  However, if you have an ulcer or lesion which persists for more than 7 days, seek your dentist’s advice.

More and more methods are becoming available to help you stop...
