Erosion is caused by chemical wear on teeth.  This occurs due to acid in the mouth.  Acid can come from several sources:
  • Fizzy Drinks
  • Fruit Juice
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Acid Reflux/vomiting

Sugar free/diet drinks often contain acid instead of sugar and so can still damage teeth.

Erosion presents as: -

  •
Tooth Wear Thin weak enamel on edges of teeth that chip easily
Tooth Wear
  •
Tooth Wear "Cupping" on molar teeth
  •
Tooth Wear Wear facets near the gum on the cheek sides of your teeth

There are several ways to tackle erosion if dietary acid is the cause.
  • Removing fizzy drinks/juices from the diet or consuming them only at mealtimes.
  • Using a strew to bypass the teeth.
  • Using a proenamauel toothpaste (e.g. Sensdyne proenamauel/Arm and Hammer with liquid calcium).
  • Using a fluoride mouthwash during the day immediately after consuming the acidic drink/food

Other tooth wear can be caused by brushing your teeth to hard (Toothbrush abrasion).

Soft bristled manual toothbrushes or electric toothbrushes are helpful in correcting brushing technique.

Simple ‘wear and tear’ over years can also cause similar near facets in teeth known as abfraction.

Grinding your teeth can also lead to tooth wear and sensitivity known as attrition.  Please consult your dentist if you would like to know more about these problems
