Acupuncture can be used to treat many complaints including jaw pain, muscle pain, migraines, sinus problems and even to control overactive gag reflexes during dental treatment.

It has never been fully understood how acupuncture actually works, but its effects have been seen for centuries and studies are now starting to support its therapeutic effect.

Small acupuncture pins are inserted to areas of pathology within the affected area of the muscle being treated.  It is thought this causes a local release of steroids within that area of muscle which leads to relief of pain.  It may take 2-3 sessions to take affect but the majority of patients who undergo acupuncture do notice an improvement in their symptoms.  It is also used therapeutically by some professional footballers regularly.

The acupuncture pins are removed a few minutes after being placed, so treatment usually takes no longer than 20 minutes.  The placement of the pins is on the whole painless and patients don't suffer bruising or bleeding as the pins are extremely fine.

Ask your dentist about acupuncture.  Some patients who are suitable for treatment find pain they have suffered with for years can be relieved.
